Continue reading the main story Photo Rule Britannia, the early years: Emily Blunt as the young Queen Victoria of England. Her arms are white and fashionably plump, her dress cream and splashed with gold. Her coronation robe, a massive ermine-and-red-velvet cloak, spills off her bared shoulders and onto the ground, creating a luxurious puddle. She looks a bit bored — heavy hangs the crown, or at least those opulent threads. No one wants to watch the lives and loves of the rich and dowdy. That at least seems to be the prevailing filmmaker wisdom, which is why what we usually get in movies about royal personages from dusty and distant worlds are sumptuous frocks, soaring music, a dash of intrigue and thunderous nonsense.
Because this queen spent so much of her life draped in black and gloom, her younger self would seem particularly ripe material. But while she was born with a royal spoon in her mouth, little Victoria, like so many rich girls before and since, proves deeply unhappy. Isolated from other children, with only servants and a spaniel for company, Victoria amuses herself as best she can. Blunt tries her hardest to interest us as well, but there is limited entertainment in watching even an appealing actress wander forlornly, talking to herself and the dog.

The Fireplace The Parlor fireplace was my first attempt at a total restoration of one of the house’s original marble fireplaces. The challenges would prove to be way beyond my initial estimates, but as the centerpiece to this wonderful room, it is essential that this be done carefully. Prior to the complete demolition of the Parlor, there were a number of obvious problems with this fireplace.
The most obvious was the fact that it was literally sinking into the floor. I was able to correct the problem by using a rather powerful hydraulic jacking system to raise the supporting beams in the basement and to add new support columns. Problem number one – solved.

Whether the thing was made of feathers, silk, or paper, the idea at first was simply to cool the person. But there was something exquisitely graceful about a beautiful lady waving her fan and, as women will, they discovered it. It was a new way to say yes, no, or maybe. The origin of hand fans can be traced as far back as four thousand years ago in Egypt. The fan was seen as a sacred instrument, used in religious ceremonies, and as a symbol of royalty power. With the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb, two elaborate fans were found in his tomb, one with a golden handle covered in ostrich feathers and the other was ebony, covered with gold and precious stones.

The ancient Greeks wrote poems of fans being the “scepters of feminine beauty” and Romans brought Greek fans back to Rome as objects of great value. The bodice buttons center front with a stand collar, has dropped shoulders, full length sleeves and a slit peplum back. The skirt is two layers. The underskirt is a plain cotton with a pieced silk border and a ruffle at the hem. This has suspender straps that could be pinned in place. The overskirt has a flat front with gathered back, cotton waist band to match the underskirt, and a brown bow on own side.
There is a pocket in this skirt as well. The overskirt is almost full length with a ruffle edge as well. I think this has been altered due to needle marks in odd places. The bodice is not boned. The bodice and underskirt are good. No stains, minor wear at most. The over skirt has had a lot of wear.
